About

To create something distinctive, intriguing, inviting, (sometimes surreal)…and beautiful

Melina Born in New Zealand, raised in Los Angeles, California, I moved to London in the early 1980’s; two decades later home became a village outside the historic city of Bath in the West Country.

My artistic career started in the early 1980’s creating relief paintings and wooden sculpture, holding exhibitions  in Los Angeles and in London.

With a studio in Covent Garden amidst a buzz of the emerging London fashion scene, and when clubs such as the Blitz, Camden Palace, Bat Cave, Taboo, Gossips, Hard Times fused music with fashion I began experimenting with different forms of plastic. This led onto creating jewellery and for a number of years I worked in accessory design producing one off pieces and limited ranges in collaboration with clothing designers and shops such as Paul Smith, Liberty’s, Kansai (whose designs were  worn by David Bowie in his Ziggy Stardust Tour), Pam Hogg, The Mutoid Waste Company.  My pieces were used in catwalk shows and magazine shoots for the likes of  John Galliano and ID magazine, and in increasingly popular pop videos.

Exhibitions of more elaborate pieces were held at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, Aspects Gallery in London, the Craft Museum in Los Angeles and boutique showrooms of  Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles.

Over the years my work has been guided by the emergence of the digital realm, with drawing, painting and collage still forming the basis of my creative process.

I have produced books covers, illustrations, artwork for advertisement and fashion. I have also created pattern design for commercial purposes.

I would be very happy to hear about any projects open for my participation. I enjoy collaboration and welcome proposals of affiliation or cooperation.
